The way most firms still picture it
One straight line to the top of Google, then the click does the rest.
How it actually works in 2026
Not a line. A web of signals that ends in being cited by name, and ranked.
For twenty years, the mental model for getting found was a straight line. Pick your keywords, earn some backlinks, publish content, climb the rankings, and collect the clicks. Number one on Google was the finish line. That model still lives in most firms' heads, and it is now only half the story.
The way a prospective client finds you has quietly rewired itself. Before they ever reach a results page, many of them ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview a direct question: who is the best estate planning attorney near me, which concierge practice should I call, who handles construction payment disputes in Miami. The engine reads the web, composes a single answer, and names a few firms. If your firm is not one of the names, the prospect never sees you, and there is no page two to save you.
The click used to be the finish line because search returned a list and the user did the choosing. AI search returns a decision. It does the reading, the comparing, and the shortlisting, then hands the prospect a composed recommendation. That moves the contest from "rank in the list" to "get named in the answer."
This is why ranking on page one of Google and being invisible to ChatGPT can both be true at the same time. They are judged on different signals. Google rewards pages that match keywords and earn links. AI engines reward firms they can identify with confidence, verify against other sources, and quote cleanly. A firm can win the first game and lose the second without ever knowing it.
The 2026 path is not linear, but it is learnable. Each step feeds the next, and the destination is being cited by name and ranked, not one or the other.
It is tempting to treat AI visibility as a replacement for SEO. It is not. Ranking keeps you discoverable to the crawlers that feed the AI. Citation is what an actual human reads and acts on. Drop the foundation and the engines cannot find you to cite. Chase only rankings and you win a list nobody reads anymore. The firms that pull ahead are the ones building both halves at once: the on-page structure that makes them legible, and the off-page authority that makes them trusted.
That is the split we build against. On-page work is fast and ships early. Off-page corroboration relies on third-party sources and takes the full quarter, because verification and propagation run on schedules no one controls.
There is a fast way to check, and you can run it yourself. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions a prospect would really type: who is the best estate planning attorney in Coral Gables, which concierge practice in Miami takes new executive-health patients, who advises South Florida family offices on private markets. Then run the same searches on Google, and compare the two.
The pattern tells you where to start. If you rank on Google but the AI never names you, the foundation is fine and the gap is structure and corroboration: schema, answer-ready content, and the third-party mentions the engine cross-checks. If the AI describes a firm like yours but cannot name you, and you also struggle to find yourself on Google, start with the foundation. Guessing at which half it is can cost you a quarter. Measuring it takes about ten minutes.
If your marketing is still measured only by where you rank, you are grading yourself on half the exam. The honest first move is to see where you actually stand: whether the engines find your firm, trust it, and cite it by name when a prospect asks who to hire. You cannot fix what you have not measured, and you cannot measure it by checking your Google rank.

No. A strong SEO foundation is still required, because AI engines crawl and trust the same web that Google indexes. What changed is that ranking is no longer the finish line. Foundations are now the price of entry, and being cited by name in the AI answer is how you win. The AI Visibility Scorecard checks both layers in about 10 minutes.
Ranked means your page appears in a classic results list. Cited means an AI engine names your firm inside the answer it composes for a prospect. In 2026 you need both: the ranking keeps you discoverable, and the citation is what a client actually reads and acts on. Our AI Visibility service is built to earn both.

On-page work (schema, entity clarity, answer-ready content) can surface in AI answers within 2 to 6 weeks. Off-page authority (directories, citations, third-party mentions) takes the full quarter, because it depends on how quickly other sources corroborate you. No engine guarantees a citation; they decide independently. See how we structure that in the 90-day engagement.
